Very insightful article.
Not bad, but I think it isn't well sourced. Consider this article on some statistics on who may have actually voted for Trump:
"The Mythology Of Trump’s ‘Working Class’ Support "
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-mythology-of-trumps-working-class-support/
(Edited to add this article which is post-election: https://newrepublic.com/article/138754/blame-trumps-victory-college-educated-whites-not-working-class)
Also, if you take a look at the percentage of Trump voters in rural areas, the skew was so much toward Trump that a high proportion of rural women must also have voted for him over Clinton.
I have a suspicion that rural voters lean conservative simply because a larger percentage are self-employed versus urban voters. Government laws, regs, and such generally make life more difficult for the self-employed. And even when not self-employed, the average business is fairly small in rural areas relative to urban areas. Other aspects like access to public utilities may not exist or be limited, requiring the average rural voter to be more self-sufficient anyway. Government regs generally interfere than help in that regard.
