My father died when I was still in grade school, and no financial help available from my mother who was working hard just to feed and keep a roof over seven kids. So I had to pay for college by working summers, getting student loans, and got awarded some Pell grants (based on need, not on my scholastic ability, alas.) Also helped the budget immensely by living at home while in college. I remember well the razer thin budgeting I operated on during those years and several years after graduating when I was finally out and about.
Thinking back on it, it now feels strange to be prepping for retirement and planning where to move to next. Wyoming, Black Hills area of South Dakota, and hill country area of Texas are leading contenders.

We helped pay the vast bulk of the college cost because that was OUR obligation and free choice.
My father paid for my education, and when I graduated, I asked him how/when I was to start paying him back. He said you don't pay me, you do it for your children. And if you don't, I'll haunt you from the grave.
And with that and a handshake, it was done. I know what I have to do.

The Chik Fil A owners donate to Christian causes with their private money that are against Gay marriage, as is their legal right. Their restaurants show no evidence of this, nor any religious, or Christian messages. This enrages the Left. However, they are OK with big corporations using corporate money to donate and support anti legal gun ownership, Planned Parenthood, Man Made Climate Change, any other Progressive cause, and Democrat politicians.
I rarely eat fast food chains, but Chik Fil A is the best, with the friendliest employees, best service, and good product for fast food.
