People are hopelessly distorted about Covid.  I went to a doctor appointment yesterday and the nurse was wearing a mask. I told her I couldn’t hear her so she lowered her mask.

I said, “Isn’t the Covid hysteria all over with now?”

And she said, “Oh no, we had nine cases this week!”

(Oh sure, I thought.  How many of those were false positives?)

But I said, “Aren’t they a lot milder now?”

And she said, “Well everybody is different.”  (No deaths mentioned.)  “And there are all kinds of variations now!”

And I said, “Yes, just like how the common cold and flu mutates and there are all kinds of variations.”

Silence.  I guess it’s too much to hope that she saw the logic there, or dislogic, of handling Covid differently than we’ve been handling colds and flu for all time.

This isn’t really a joke. It is an accurate description of me.

I love that story, Eppy.

Wearing liberal crap to Oshkosh is a bit like wearing a MAGA hat into Starbucks. Oshkosh is about teamwork, innovation, shared history, FOLLOWING CERTAIN IMMUTABLE LAWS OF NATURE, and so on.

I wore the t-shirt shown in my profile picture to a Starbucks. Got lots of people peering at it and shaking their heads. I guess they can’t comprehend non-Democrats having certain opinions or certain qualities that don’t fit their preconceived beliefs.

A little story from yesterday.....

My wife and I go out for breakfast on Fridays.  We rotate between a couple of local restaurants.  We're sitting at our table and young man gets set at the table next to us.  He asks us what's good as he's never been there before.  We gave him a couple of ideas and he ordered his breakfast. We ended up chatting and he told us a story of his work place.  He is the Maintenance Manager at a distribution warehouse. Talked about three ladies that work, one Jewish and two Seventh day Adventists.  They had been told they had to work on a Saturday for mandatory overtime. They were distraught and had volunteered to work Sunday instead but told it had to be Saturday. Jamie went to their work area and noticed one of them was extremely upset. He learned about their issue while talking with them.  Jamie ended up going to the General Manager and having a conversation with him. He explained that they had to put up with having gender neutral bathroom and attending a Pride Month event, the least he could do is accommodate these three ladies.  He stood up for them and in the end they are being allowed to work on Sunday.

Jamie is a strong Conservative whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from Columbia when he was six.  He was raised as a Conservative and has a seven year old son.  I asked him if his son had been asked to pick pronouns yet. He said no and if he was he'd pull him from school.

Nice to meet folks like Jamie.

There was an article on DEI in today's WSJ. Looks like it is being scaled back rather than spreading further:

The Rise and Fall of the Chief Diversity Officer
Diversity executives hit the exits as company priorities shift; ‘everything is a battle’

Two years ago chief diversity officers were some of the hottest hires into executive ranks. Now, they increasingly feel left out in the cold.

Companies including Netflix, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery have recently said that high-profile diversity, equity and inclusion executives will be leaving their jobs. Thousands of diversity-focused workers have been laid off since last year, and some companies are scaling back racial justice commitments.

Diversity, equity and inclusion—or DEI—jobs were put in the crosshairs after many companies started re-examining their executive ranks during the tech sector’s shake out last fall. Some chief diversity officers say their work is facing additional scrutiny since the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action in college admissions and companies brace for potential legal challenges. DEI work has also become a political target.

I just saw that on Twitter.  I hope it’s a sign people are waking up to how destructive that shit is.  If you care about your 401k for example.  Maybe they saw what happened to Bud Light.

ALL companies that do this DEI/ESG shit need to be investigated for failing their fiduciary duty. It’s more than culture war when companies put woke garbage above making a profit for their investors when our retirement portfolios and pensions are involved.

I agree they should sell the stock but it’s hard to move on when this crap is spreading like cancer to all corporations.

STEM.  The source of all our survival.  The smartest and best of our people who keep all the rest of us alive.  Not surprising they are the ones most rejecting woke lunacy.  And now they're being targeted.  "We must indoctrinate STEM!" this article says.  Because they're "Fascist".  Because their fascism is white supremacy and is what begat the U.S. of A. which is an evil racist nation and must be destroyed.  Let us destroy the thing that brought the human species out of poverty, disease and starvation and into the modern world where more people live more safely and comfortably than ever in the history of mankind.

Fucking idiots.

The irony is that they, the woke left, are the actual fascists.

Yes, and they're still lying about Covid but also man made climate change, EVs, how evil fossil fuel is, etc.
It's a lot easier when they have all dissenting views violently suppressed.  It's all about money and control.  It has nothing to do with public health, climate, social engineering, or anything else they say they are working on.  Simply replace any topic they are talking about with "the money" and it all makes a lot more sense.

We want you to get vaccines because of the money.
We want you to drive EVs because of the money.
We want to ban drilling for oil because of the money.
We want [ethnic group] to riot in the streets because of the money.

See?  It's easy.

Yeah but what are we going to do about it? The Republicans will do nothing but whine. People who want to “get over 2020 and move on” will like wise do nothing again. Anyone who actually tries to effectively fight it will also be targeted and thrown into prison. We don’t have enough political will to actually attempt secession or enough collective balls to start a civil war over it.

I think in the end we will accept whomever is installed in 2024, grumble a lot, and do nothing. Convention of States anyone?

I’m old enough to remember when people in actual jobs actually were expected, without fanfare or specifications, to come up with ideas to do things better and initiate new processes to improve existing things, and visualize how something new or different might be helpful.

This “possibilities” crap is indeed a thin veil over WOKE BULLSHIT GRIFTING. Or worse, just the kind of jerkwads who will spend millions of your money, Bob, on failed programs that make said GRIFTERS look virtuous for their five minutes of fame for “solving” some problem, or coming up with a nonexistent one to “solve,” until their personal wealth mysteriously swells and the program failures are never reported except on Page 794 of the state budget as a loss of millions.

All the while, pragmatic solutions, possibilities and processes are discarded as racist or unfair, such as personal responsibility and enforcement of laws.

This reminds me of when BHO was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the “possibility” he showed in working toward peace, not for any peace he actually brought about.

Galling.

You LOVE Petroleum?  That's just plain weird.

I love some of the things petroleum products can do for me, or provide for me, but I have no love for or attachment to petroleum itself.

Petroleum underlies our entire economy and civilization.

Pilot Zone / Re: Passengers passing out from heat in Vegas
« on: July 20, 2023, 05:48:28 AM »
When I flew at a large regional they often would defer one pack on a certain model jet that the remaining pack just could not cool the plane, especially if it was heat soaked. I refused the plane many times despite pressure to take it. Young Capts and wimpy Capts would take it and the poor passengers suffered.

As for ground AC at the gate they often didn’t work very well trying to cool a hot plane on a hot ramp in the southeast. It’s frustrating for the crew trying to do the right thing but management only cares about getting that flight moving. Some things apparently don’t change.
