American University has created a space for students of different identities to come together and foster a sense of community, but some students recently complained it’s too inclusive.
The room, known as the Hub for Organizing Multiculturalism and Equity, or HOME, opened in November 2017 in the wake of alleged hate crimes against black students.
More recently, a feature in The Eagle campus newspaper on the 1-year-old room detailed how some students are frustrated that officials allow students of any ethnicity to use it, rather than only students of color, and also that “several students said they viewed HOME as a response to their request for a black house.”
“What we needed was a large community space that the entire black community could get together and support one another,” student Ma’at Sargeant, a member of the Black Student Alliance, told the newspaper.
And more than black students are voicing concern.
Sam Liang, a member of the Asian American Student Union, said “I understand why they would’ve opened it to everyone because exclusivity isn’t something that’s really garnered on campus … but it makes it feel like the point of it isn’t there anymore.”
Othniel Malcolm Andrew Harris, a student who has been involved in organizing protests at the university, told The College Fix that HOME is not enough for black students on campus after reports of racist incidents from a few years back.
Harris explained that other schools, including in the D.C. area, have “Black Houses,” which are on-campus houses dedicated to black students, and he wants the same for American University.

Did you miss it? CNN’s initial reports referred to the “protesters” as “eclectic” and “peaceful”.
But you need not cross the shining seas to experience violence, destruction of property and a general dismantling of liberal values from the political left. You could simply visit America’s elite college campuses like Yale or Middlebury or Berkeley, where tomorrow’s leaders attempt to shut down conservative voices with protest or riots. At Middlebury, rioting students landed liberal professor Allison Stranger in a neck brace for the crime of defending a conservative academic’s right to speak. At Berkeley, mobs of students created a “war zone” ahead of a planned visit from conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos, injuring Trump supporters and causing $100,000 in damages.
Or head to Portland, Oregon, one of the most liberal cities in the nation in the heart of the progressive Pacific Northwest, which last week Politico labeled “America’s Most Politically Violent City.” The progressive paradise– where Republicans are virtually an extinct species – has witnessed millions in damages attributed to the same types of anti-fascists-in-name-only that kept Hamburg residents paralyzed in fear this month. A “counter-protest” to a planned pro-Trump rally landed 14 Antifa in jail for attacking the police with explosives and bricks.
BERLIN (AP) – German lawmakers approved a bill on Friday aimed at cracking down on hate speech on social networks, which critics say could have drastic consequences for free speech online.
The measure approved is designed to enforce the country’s existing limits on speech, including the long-standing ban on Holocaust denial. Among other things, it would fine social networking sites up to 50 million euros ($56 million) if they persistently fail to remove illegal content within a week, including defamatory “fake news.”
“Freedom of speech ends where the criminal law begins,” said Justice Minister Heiko Maas, who was the driving force behind the bill.

In a commencement address to graduates at Harvard University last month, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said the coming wave of automation and displacement will require “a new social contract” between the government and the governed. “We should have a society that measures progress not by economic metrics like GDP but by how many of us have a role we find meaningful,” Zuckerberg said. A pregnant woman delivered swift punishment to a purse snatcher by running him down with her SUV in a Walmart parking lot in North Carolina, according to a report.
Christine Braswell, 26, told WLOS that she found the man rummaging through her SUV on Wednesday afternoon in Asheville before he took off running with her purse.
“Me being five months pregnant, I chased a little ways then come back, jumped in the car, threw it in gear and come across the curb and ran him over,” she said.
“I was not going to let him get away with it. It’s not right, it’s not fair,” she added.
The suspect, Robert Raines, who was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, was charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny and misdemeanor damage to property.
For her part, Braswell was charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. She doesn’t face hard labor.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans and a patriots’ group called Real 3% Risen, have received special use permits for 11 a.m to 6 p.m. Saturday in a special section north of Meade’s Headquarters.
“We make accommodations for people who want to exercise their First Amendment rights,” said Katie Lawhon, a spokeswoman for the Gettysburg National Military Park.
Officials also are aware of plans for other rallies that have been announced on social media but have not obtained permits and there are unconfirmed reports that anarchists plan to burn Confederate flags during the anniversary of the battle
Reports that the anti-fascist group Antifa plans to burn Confederate flags and desecrate graves has prompted calls on social media for other groups to gather in Gettysburg to counter anarchist protesters.
The anniversary of the battle, which raged from July 1 to July 3, 1863, comes at a time when there is a growing movement to remove Confederate symbols from public spaces.

The decision could also have further-reaching implications for other Google products and services—as well as those from competitors.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is growing older and more ethnically diverse, a trend that could put strains on government programs from Medicare to education, the Census Bureau reported Thursday.
Every ethnic and racial group grew between 2015 and 2016, but the number of whites increased at the slowest rate — less than one hundredth of 1 percent or 5,000 people, the Census estimate shows. That's a fraction of the rates of growth for non-white Hispanics, Asians and people who said they are multi-racial, according to the government's annual estimates of population.
President Donald Trump's core support in the racially divisive 2016 election came from white voters, and polls showed that it was especially strong among those who said they felt left behind in an increasingly racially diverse country. In fact, the Census Bureau projects whites will remain in the majority in the U.S. until after 2040.
"Even then, (whites) will still represent the nation's largest plurality of people, and even then they will still inherit the structural advantages and legacies that benefit people on the basis of having white skin," said Justin Gest, author of "The New Minority," a book about the 2016 election.
