Words/phrases that must be removed from usage

(in no particular order)

Snowflake (a new name will be required for the plant formerly known as snowflake)

Social Justice Warrior (warrior is too militaristic)

Chief (could be viewed as derogatory to Native Americans)

Native Americans (don't want to offend immigrants)

Any association of white with purity (this includes getting rid of all white wedding gowns)

Black ice

Black hole

Pitch black

Black top

Will battery terminals need to be changed?  (if it's not obvious, think about it...)

Spin Zone / "Media goes negative on Trump coverage"
« on: June 15, 2020, 05:04:56 AM »
op-ed piece in the Boston Herald today has the headline "Media goes negative on Trump coverage"

At first I thought it was about the media going negative about all the negative coverage of President Trump.

Silly me.

Apparently the op-ed author has been living under a rock for the past 4 years.  Apparently he is only now noticing how negative and snarky the coverage of President Trump has been.

Instead of celebrating how COVID-19 deaths are down, etc etc

Instead we have reports of THE SECOND WAVE IS COMING.  We are all going to die.

Look at the top 4 youtube things about covid-19.

Spin Zone / Reparations fallacy
« on: June 14, 2020, 05:49:20 AM »
One problem with slavery reparations is the assumption that money/wealth in a family, stays in the family forever.

Over the years how many "rich" people have gifted people/organizations other than their immediate family?

Over the years how many "rich" people have lost their fortune?  (can you say Great Depression?)

Over the years how many "rich" people have been scammed?

Over the years how many "rich" people have lost everything because of drug/alcohol abuse?

Over the years how many "rich" people have started a new business venture only to see it completely and utterly fail?

Over the years how many "rich" people have lost everything because of a gambling addiction?

A simple case study is to look at our highly paid athletes... there are plenty of examples of athletes suddenly getting rich and then losing all of it (or almost all of it).  Consider Derek Sanderson (former Boston Bruin).

Now, ask the same questions again, but replace "rich" with "lower class" or "middle class"

If my grandfather had property (one grandfather did indeed have farm land), there is no guarentee that I would have inherited any of it (and, in fact, I didn't).

Spin Zone / Halloween
« on: June 09, 2020, 04:29:26 PM »
idle thought... apropos of nothing much at this time...

What will various States do wrt Halloween?

I'm guessing that South Dakota will have normal ops for Halloween.  On the other end of the spectrum, Taxachusetts will probably want a virtual halloween for the kids.

Think about all the possibilities for halloween costumes... scaring the snowflakes to death with COVID-19-themed gear.

Spin Zone / COVID-19 surcharges
« on: June 06, 2020, 06:00:21 PM »
I understand that businesses have expenses directly resulting from COVID-19 procedures/requirements for PPE and cleaning/sanitizing and the like (as well as inefficiencies from reduced capacity).

I understand that people don't like being nickled and dimed with surcharges (clearly disclosed ahead of time or not).

What I'm struggling with is how businesses are expected to pay for the COVID-19 costs or if people are even willing to pay for increased costs.

This output was for 2017 (the most recent year available)

All Victims Death Counts and Rates per 100,000
All Intents, Injured by Law Enforcement Officer, All Mechanisms
All Races, Both Sexes, All Ages

Number of Deaths    Population    Crude Rate    Age-Adjusted
Rate**
559    206,784,326    0.27    0.28

All Victims Death Counts and Rates per 100,000
All Intents, Injured by Law Enforcement Officer, All Mechanisms
Black, Both Sexes, All Ages

Number of Deaths    Population    Crude Rate    Age-Adjusted
Rate**
137    29,809,195    0.46    0.45

137 deaths out of 559 is just about 25%.  Higher than you would expect given the relative percentage of the population (about 13%).  I'm not sure where they got the population numbers.

Spin Zone / USAF must be hard up for maintainers
« on: June 02, 2020, 08:00:28 AM »
Yesterday I received a mailing from the USAF saying I could earn up to a $2,000 enlistment bonus.

"Start building your career"
"Become an Air Force Maintainer"

Do you think my being 61 years old would be a drawback?

aw nuts... to qualify for the enlistment bonus I must be between 18 and 39 years of age.

missed it by that much...so close.

Spin Zone / White Privilege - the ultimate liberal fantasy
« on: June 02, 2020, 07:53:25 AM »
Whites get ahead because of the color of their skin - they didn't earn it.

Blacks get the short end of the stick because of the color of their skin.

Everyone gets to blame it on others.  No one takes responsibility for their own actions and decisions.

For the liberals, it's perfect.

https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2020/theres-an-unconscious-bias-in-virtual-meetings-heres-how-you-can-avoid-it/

"“Unconscious bias can intersect with language, symbolism and nonverbal cues that reinforce normative social identities with respect to gender, race, sexual preference and socioeconomic status,” Bonomi said. “For example, when the virtual background of a Zoom meeting attendee has pictures of his or her wedding, it unintentionally reinforces the idea that marriage is most fitting between opposite sexes.”"

and it gets better...

good grief

Today (Tuesday) the COVID-19 daily death toll increased from yesterdays count (for the USA and a number of recently reopened States).

How long will it take for people to start screaming "we told you so!"?

Spin Zone / COVID-19 Data not being reported
« on: May 23, 2020, 03:50:58 PM »
We hear about new cases, we hear about deaths, we hear about people hospitalized, we hear about people in ICU. etc etc

But we don't hear about people who have recovered.

https://www.wbur.org/news/2020/05/08/massachusetts-coronavirus-numbers-recovered

ok, so one problem is the settling on a definition of recovered.

For a moment, putting aside the challenge of a usable defition of recovered, wouldn't decisions to reopen, etc, be better informed with knowledge of a count of people recovered?  Without acknowledging that people recover and that recovery is not some miracle, we aren't being correctly informed about COVID-19

Spin Zone / Do your Patriotic duty
« on: May 23, 2020, 01:04:11 PM »
Near the end of Gov Baker's daily briefing Friday (5/22/2020), he went off on people needing wear masks.  He talked about it being Memorial Day weekend and all those men and women who made the sacrifice for our freedom.  He talked about how we need to respect their sacrifices and wear masks.

Yup, he equated wearing a mask with patriotism and, by extension, labelled all those deniers as unpatriotic.

https://www.mass.gov/covid19-updates (don't know how long the video will be available at that url) at about the one hour mark.
