Spin Zone / Abortion
« on: April 06, 2023, 04:05:01 AM »
I don't agree with all the hand-wringing about "we are doomed",  "There is nothing we can do" etc.
And I especially don't agree with the feeling that there is nothing we can do because however many people vote Republican, the Dems will just cheat and create all the votes they need.

I do agree with the conservative stances on things like economics, defense, gun rights, personal responsibility, voter ID, border security and a lot more, but there are some very hot and very divisive issues where we need to find some middle ground.

I think many of the Republicans problems are brought on by themselves.
(go ahead, call me a pussy, rino, liberal troll whatever).

But I think one of the big things killing their chances at the polls is their stance on abortion.  I don't agree with abortion, but I don't think my opinion should be foisted on others.

Here is what I think the Repbulican position on abortion should be:

Abortion should be decided on by the woman over 18 (or pick an age), her doctor, AND the father.
  Or
decided by the girl, her doctor AND her parents.

The Federal government should not fund abortion, but they should not stand in the way of private abortion financing

They should not turn doctors and abortion clinics into criminals, unless they do something criminal (like selling baby parts).

That would take a lot of the stamina out of the pro-abortionist movement, and thus the anti-Republican movement.

There are other issues.  When I get time I will start another similar thread on the environment.

Fire away.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley says she supports a proposed bill that would make it legal to carry guns without a permit or training, The State newspaper reports.

The proposed Constitutional Carry Act (S. 115) would decriminalize carrying a firearm without a permit — effectively eliminating the need for a concealed weapons license and related training — and would allow people to carry firearms either concealed or out in the open.

“Criminals are dangerous," Haley said Tuesday, "and I think that every resident should be allowed to protect themselves from criminals."

If enacted, South Carolina would be the sixth state with such a law. Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Vermont and Wyoming already have similar laws on the books

Spin Zone / IPhone battery
« on: November 30, 2021, 02:19:54 PM »
My Iphone warned me about a low battery at 4pm.  That is the earliest it ever gave that warning, except for when I ran the GPS all morning without plugging it in.

I checked the battery stats and the biggest battery user today was "Exposure Notification".  I had head of this, but I thought you had to manually turn it on.

It is OFF now and the phone is on the charger.

It has been in the local paper all week.

I know of a lot of white kids that had to get their hair cut if they wanted to join the service.  In fact, I knew a bunch of white kids that had to get their hair cut when they DIDN'T want to enlist, but were drafted.

In case it is behind a paywall, here is the gist:
Quote
A Black JROTC student says he's being harassed after refusing to cut off his hair

Logan Rentz thought a lot about joining the U.S. Army before he entered his freshman year at Spruce Creek High School. In fact, he couldn't stop thinking about it — so he decided to join the JROTC program at the school to test it out.

But when he was told he'd have to cut his hair to wear the uniform that's characteristic of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, he was surprised.

Logan, who is Black, wears his hair in locs and usually ties it up in a bun. The style is also referred to as "dreadlocks," but that term has historically negative connotations. The News-Journal is using the term locs because that's the descriptor the Rentz family uses.

"I thought they were playing around when they first said it," Logan said.

He and his mom, Keshia, quickly figured out it wasn't a joke. He ended up having to make a choice: his hair and the ties it has to his family and their culture, or the class that he was so excited to join and where he had already developed friendships.

The 15-year-old chose his hair over the uniform, triggering what the family says has been weeks of what they view as harassment centered around a policy they haven't been able to get a clear answer on. Now, with their attorney, they're considering filing federal and state complaints.

 herd hûrd►

    n.
A group of cattle or other domestic animals of a single kind kept together for a specific purpose.
    n.
A number of wild animals of one species that remain together as a group.

Why are we being treated like a herd?  What kind of domestic or wild animal are we?  Sheep?  Cattle?  And for what single purpose are they keeping us together?

Spin Zone / Climate Change; a poll
« on: September 01, 2021, 05:38:41 AM »
I often say things like "nobody disputes the climate is changing", but am I talking out my ass when I say that

I know.  The poll questions suck and leaves out how most people really feel.  So briefly, what is your opinion on whether it is happening and is it a good thing or bad thing (for most humans) or makes no difference.  For me, it is a big concern because my house is about 30 inches above sea level about 150 feet from the intracoastal waterway.

Spin Zone / Friend dies of Covid

More of an acquaintance than a friend, but we did talk fairly often.  I was surprised to see this in the paper today since I had not talked to him for several weeks.
He didn't think he needed or trusted the vaccine either.
