Spin Zone / New UPS delivery feature - Live map
« on: April 16, 2020, 06:05:03 AM »
I'm expecting a UPS delivery (a couple of 96%-inletted stocks).  Apparently UPS has a new feature where you can see where the delivery truck is.

I think it's a bit (no pun) much to provide that much information to the customer, but I suppose it doesn't really cost UPS anything but a small amount of bandwidth.

Apparently smoking increases the probabilty of severe illness resulting from a COVID-19 infection.

So, why hasn't anyone banned smoking?

Spin Zone / COVID-19 deaths vs expected number of deaths
« on: April 10, 2020, 08:21:38 AM »
In Massachusetts, most of the COVID-19 deaths are in the population 60 and up (by "most" I mean nearly all).

So far, the highest daily number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 is 96 (all ages).

Using CDC data, if we look at the population of Massachusetts, grouped by ages, and then look at past death rates (by age groups).   You have to mash the data together (the CDC doesn't have a canned report for this nor a single set of queries), but you can get a rough idea that (for Massachusetts), we can normally expect 150 deaths per day for the population 55 and up.

I wonder how many deaths Massachusetts is experiencing that are being attributed to causes other than COVID-19.

in an otherwise totalitarian commonwealth

25:10 into it.

Gov Baker was responding to a question about raising taxes and he said something like:  so, in an economic downturn with something like as much as 25% of the workforce could be unemployed, we should raise taxes?  I don't think so.

The tone of voice was perfect (especially if you are familar with his normal speech pattern)

A $349 billion dollar loan program for small businesses.

The initial wave of applications apparently have crippled the SBA computers.

(there's an AP story on this)

And, I'm sure nobody could have anticipating this.

Now, in fairness, there is a huge difference between the processing needs of google, amazon, etc and the nominal computing needs of the SBA.

ps - we can bet large sums of OPM that President Trump will be blamed

Spin Zone / Fortunately, we started with a robust economy
« on: April 07, 2020, 09:32:16 AM »
Given how the panic has fueled the economic crises, how very fortunate we are that we had a robust economy to start with (no thanks to the moroons that worship at the feet of pelosi and the rest of the democrats).

to develop a serology test?

Are there any examples of an antibody test being developed and approved (never mind fielded) in less than 2 months?

Even just one example?

When computing a fatality rate for COVID-19, it's important to have a reasonable handle on the number of deaths caused by COVID-19 and the number of people infected with the COVID-19 virus.

Apparently Mark Levine, Chair of New York City Council health committee, is claiming that a number of COVID-19 deaths in NYC are going unreported because there is insufficient testing resources to test everyone who dies in the city.

Ok, that could cause the number of deaths to be underreported, at least for places that have insufficient test resources

However, it is also apparent that NYC is counting anyone who dies and had COVID-19 as a COVID-19 death.  Having the virus and having the virus cause death are two different things.

This would cause the number of deaths to be overreported.  (I suppose this could be adjusted by considering the number of elderly people that normally pass away from other causes.)

Disease modelers at the University of Texas at Austin believe that the number of actual COVID-19 cases could be higher than reported (by as much as a factor of 10).  Insufficient testing means a number of people could have the virus but don't know it.

If true, this would mean that the fatality rate is lower than it appears to be.

Colorado's health website (https://covid19.colorado.gov/case-data) states that they also count people who are "highly-likely" to be infected but haven't been tested but that number is a very small portion of the total case count.

We could probably find many other examples of poor data-collection that would skew the fatality rate calculation.

It doesn't take much messing with the numerator and the denominator to create wild variations in the computed/estimated fatality rate.

But I don't want to cherry-pick in either direction.

Spin Zone / Conspiracy
« on: April 06, 2020, 09:49:32 AM »
Notice how most of the COVID-19 cases cluster in heavily democrat-controlled locations?

It must be a plot by the Trump administration to bankrupt those areas.

Spin Zone / Antibody test being rolled out...
« on: April 06, 2020, 04:55:24 AM »
Today's Boston Herald (6 April) is reporting that a company in Framingham MA (Boston Heart Diagnostics) will be rolling out a blood-based antibody test.  Initial capacity of the testing is 5000 tests per day.

No report on how long it will take for additional testing capacity to be produced nor the cost of each test.

Contact tracing is being discussed as part of the tactics against COVID-19.

Don't get wrong (but I'm sure some will misunderstand... but I won't mention any names.... professor)

What could possibly go wrong?
