Spin Zone / Changes to DNC primaries
« on: April 19, 2022, 07:42:10 AM »
from the 19 April 2022 Boston Herald:

begin quote:

DNC leadership voted last week to change the rules and make states apply for an early spot in the lineup, rather than use the traditional order of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.

A roster of powerful Democrats in other states argue that both Iowa, which holds a caucus, and New Hampshire, the first primary, are not inclusive enough to earn such a powerful voice in the presidential process.

“This is a powerful resolution of a thoughtful process that is going to be inclusive of all Democrats,” said Massachusetts’ Jim Roosevelt Jr., who co-chairs the Rules and Bylaws Committee.  “Why should two disparate small states that don’t reflect the diversity of this country be the ones that presidential candidates go into their homes?” asked U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan.

According to the resolution, the demographic diversity of the state and the state’s competitiveness in the general election will now play major roles in how states are awarded early lineup spots.

aside from the obvious comments on the DNC, I have to wonder why the first primary is thought to be so important...

Oh No!  covid cases are "climbing" and "spiking"

The positive test rate is over 5% - oh no!  who is tested and why?

Spin Zone / flaming liberal now wants a strong defense...
« on: March 22, 2022, 09:31:14 AM »
"The first month of Russia’s barbaric campaign to conquer Ukraine and the Ukrainians’ inspiring resistance has reminded Americans of a fact that has gotten obscured in recent years: It’s crucial that the United States maintain an overwhelmingly strong national defense and stay prepared to lead on the world stage."

These are words from a flaming liberal who hated hated hated anything Trump.

Now suddenly he wants a strong defense and leadership...

edit:  sorry - I forgot to give credit to the putz who wrote those words.... Jeff Robbins

Spin Zone / I didn't expect this...

Went to fill up my car this morning (it gets reasonable gas mileage and I don't drive long distances)...

ran into the $50 limit on the fillup.  (so I simply did a second transaction for 90 cents to finish the fillup)

Pretty soon I'll have to do 3 transactions...

A big ol' bless your heart to all those contributing to rising fuel costs and overall inflation increases

Spin Zone / Maskachusetts changes definition of "covid-related death"
« on: March 11, 2022, 08:48:35 AM »
11 March 2022 Boston Herald has an article about the change in definition and one result is that the maskachusetts covid death count drops over by about 3700.

"Currently, the COVID death definition includes anyone who has COVID listed as a cause of death on their death certificate — and any individual who has had a COVID diagnosis within 60 days but does not have COVID listed as a cause of death on their death certificate. [emphasis mine]  The updated definition will reduce this time frame from 60 days to 30 days [emphasis mine] for individuals without a COVID diagnosis on their death certificate."

Isn't that amazing...  Die within 30 days of having a covid diagonisis and it will still be counted as a covid death.

Perfectly putrid data.

Also noteworthy:  “Prior to the CSTE (Council of State and Territorial Epide- miologists) definition, states did not have a nationally recommended defini- tion for COVID-19 deaths and, as such, have been using a variety of processes and definitions to count their deaths."

Spin Zone / did Sweden get it right wrt covid and restrictions?
« on: February 25, 2022, 06:11:51 PM »
https://www.bostonherald.com/2022/02/25/moore-in-the-end-sweden-got-it-right-on-covid-restrictions/

"The hero of this story is Anders Tegnell, Sweden’s chief epidemiologist. He was Sweden’s Anthony Fauci, but unlike the now-widely discredited Fauci, Tegnell eschewed lockdowns. The international media pilloried him for not following “the science.” At first, it seemed the Swedish live- and-let-live strategy was a miserable failure. Death rates soared higher than in other European nations....

Two years later, Sweden’s COVID-19 death rate is 1,614 per million people — much lower than Britain (2,335) or the U.S. (2,836), which both had much more stringent lockdowns.  Sweden appears to have achieved herd immunity much more swiftly and thor- oughly than other nations.  Deaths were higher at the start of the pandemic but fell much lower than other lock- down nations in succeeding months."

unfortunately, the author of that piece did not provide any references.

btw - it is my understanding that you can find the same sort of correlation between less stringent lockdowns and better overall death rates during the Spanish Flu pandemic.

Pretty much everytime I see a picture of high school sports in the sports page, the players are wearing a mask...... over their chin, sometimes even covering the mouth, but never covering nose and mouth.

What a joke...

Dear Abby: I’ve been seeing a married man for more than 30 years. Everything was fine between us until recently. I have begun to suspect one of my female neighbors is seeing him as well.  I’m contemplating getting in touch with his wife and my neighbor’s husband and telling them about my suspicions.  I need to know what to do so this relationship with the neighbor will stop.  I know by telling on him, I’ll lose him, but if the neighbor is after him because of his money, I don’t want his wife thinking I’m the one taking it from him.
What should I do?

Boston Mass is making MBTA 3 bus routes free in a 2 year pilot program.

"Mayor Michelle Wu has long called for the city to “Free the T.” She announced Wednesday that three of the city’s most popular bus routes: the 23, 28 and 29, will be free in a two-year pilot program, bringing her a step closer to that goal.

“We know that public transit is a public good, and it should be funded that way,” Wu said Wednesday on Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester. “Transportation is about connectedness at the end of the day, connecting us to health care, to education, to jobs and to each other.”

The three bus routes, which traverse areas of Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury, each travel along Blue Hill Avenue, an important corridor connecting riders who are underserved by the existing transit network, the city said in an announcement of the initiative. Wu noted in her remarks that this pilot is part of broader city, state and federal plans “for Blue Hill Ave. to be a transformational economic corridor in the City of Boston.”

Spin Zone / covid - "fun" facts
« on: February 10, 2022, 01:10:14 PM »
According to the CDC, during the 2018-2019 flu season, there were about 34 million cases of the flu and almost 500,000 hospitalizations because of the flu.  (about 1.44% of the cases)

Using the data from the mass.gov page regarding covid-19, in maskachusetts there have been about 58,000 "confirmed" cases of covid-19 in the past 2 weeks.  Yesterday there were current 571 people in the hospital because of covid-19.  (what is hard to determine is the length of hospital stay in order to compare these numbers with the CDC numbers for the flu.)

Looks like the covid-19 numbers are approaching what we previously experienced with the flu...  who would have thought?
