Spin Zone / Re: Being fucked up the ass by social security

There are some good reasons to take it early and every person’s situation is different. That is one thing that this book I’m reading emphasizes over and over.  The down side to waiting is how to fund yourself if you aren’t working. If you love your job and want to work til 70 that’s one thing. My husband is at the end of his rope, he’s had all he can take. He’s already told them his retirement date and that’s that, he’s done. So our choice is either trigger social security or live off our nest egg for the next few years and we are loathe to spend our nest egg, in exchange for a promise from a government I trust about as far as I could throw the Washington monument.

I have a military retirement plus my 401K from the airline so I was in pretty good shape.I think it’s a crap shoot anyway. What if you don’t make it to retirement age or even to 70? I know spousal benefits kick in. Regardless it’s worked out for us. I understand what you said about your husband being fed up. My last year I just about didn’t a shit and was fed up with management and bullshit, but I made it thru and things are good. Good luck figuring it out Rush.

I got a nasty surprise yesterday. We are coming up on the age where we need to make decisions about when to trigger the SS benefits we’ve been paying taxes for all our lives.

I worked full time in high paying jobs for several years, then quit to finish raising the kids. My social security statements kept coming in with my estimated benefit, rising every year based on COLA or something I guess, but the basic benefit calculation is some voodoo involving my past earnings.

So 5 years ago (after many years of 0 earnings) I started working part time as an independent contractor, earning significantly less than my former full time jobs. I got the yearly benefit estimate and filed them away without paying much attention, but yesterday I got them all out and looked back at them. Starting two years ago, my benefit began to decline. Apparently they are recalculating based on recent earnings.

When I decided to work part time 5 years ago I had no idea that would reduce my benefit, or I wouldn’t have done it.

So social security is punishing me for working. Had I continued to sit on my ass and be lazy I would have got the higher benefits, but now, it’s going down every year I work!

I realize that if my spousal benefit is higher then it doesn’t matter. The problem is, three years ago my own benefit at age 70 was higher than my spousal benefit will be, by $400 a month for the rest of my life!

So, the government is screwing me out of $400 every month plus COLA times however many more months I live past age 70 because I chose to start working again and pay them more FICA taxes!!!!.

I feel sick to my stomach.

Love your thread title Rush! I referenced a number of books on SS, even one from that “Everything You Wanted To Know” books. It’s definitely complicated and confusing. I took it at 62 and don’t regret it.

Three contractors bid to fix a broken fence at the White House. One is from Chicago, another is from Kentucky and the third is from New Orleans. All three go with a White House official to examine the fence.
The New Orleans contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil.
"Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $9,000. That's $4,000 for materials, $4,000 for my crew and $1,000 profit for me."
The Kentucky contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for $7,000. That's $3,000 for materials, $3,000 for my crew and $1,000 profit for me"
The Chicago contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, "$27,000."
The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys. How did you come up with such a high figure?”
"The Chicago contractor whispers back, "$10,000 for me, $10,000 for you, and we hire the guy from Kentucky to fix the fence."
"Done!" replies the government official.
And that, my friends, is how the Government Stimulus plan worked.

You know, like Hunter Biden’s painting 🙄

Maybe we should call it a "box office"????

When I flew with an airline, had a scheduled flight to a city that another of our planes doing a charter from. The flight crew were both ladies and I knew the Capt well. They were taxing out as we taxied in. On company frequency I asked if they called it a cockpit, she replies negative, it’s a box office. Doubt we could get away with it in today’s nutty world. Someone would’ve been offended.

. Generations trapped in public housing zones dependent on government where the males have abandoned fatherhood and found their only opportunities are in gangs and drug sales.

You can thank LBJ for that. He started the welfare apparatus. And fucked up the Vietnam war, with that imbecile McNamara’s micromanagement decisions.

Someone I’m teaching to fly works for one of “them federal law enforcement agencies” and told me he hung himself, had something like 14 concussions during his football playing days. FWIW.

I live in the area and we usually watch his broadcasts. Very sad, played football at Alabama under Gene Stallings. Awfully suspicious.

Homeless

I was walking down the street when I was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked me for a couple of dollars for dinner.

I took out my wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked,"If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.

"Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?" I asked.

"No, I don't waste time fishing," the homeless man said.."I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive."

"Will you spend this on hunting equipment?" I asked.

"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. "I haven't gone hunting in 20 years!"

"Well," I said, "I'm not going to give you money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."

The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that?

I replied, "Don't worry about that. It's important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking, fishing and hunting."
